Issue # 4 – February 2010

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT –Tim Cupka

We’re almost into the heart of our season and club support has been good.  The open houses have been well attended despite the low snow coverage on the “terrain trails”.  We recently had our chili cook off and first poker run and although participation was less than expected, fun was had by all. Thank you to all who made chili and participated and congratulations to the winners.  Fred and Donna are still looking for open house volunteers so if anyone has a free Saturday and would like to host please contact Donna Jones.  Our groomer operators are still looking for heavy wet snow to arrive to make our job a little easier, we still have a fantastic base but could use some new “white and wet” to bring our system back to the quality we strive for.  Snow dances are helpful; however, if not done correctly they can have devastating results like rain and warm temps instead of cold and flakes.  Contact Lisa for proper snow dance etiquette.

I’m looking for volunteers for a nominating committee.  If you would like to help out please contact me ASAP by email.  I need three volunteers and I presently have two.  The nominating committee first contacts the existing board and asks if they are willing to hold their positions.  They then need to be available to except nominations for positions by members.  Right now we have positions to fill.  If anyone would like to nominate or be on the committee please contact Me, Fred Watson (nominating committee) or Dave Sweeney (nominating committee).  All officers must be participating members as defined in our bylaws.

On a personal note, all of us have been watching reports of the devastation in Haiti.  No one can imagine the pain and despair these families are going through.  Words cannot describe how we all feel especially when it hits close to home.  Members of our SOS family are involved in this tragedy and the whereabouts of their daughter are unknown.  Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers in this very hard time.

PROCEDURE REMINDER

It’s now time to be thinking about a slate of officers for next year.  Please remember that you must be an ACTIVE MEMBER of the Scrub Oak Scramblers Snowmobile Club for the season in which you wish to run for office.  The Board of Directors has defined an “Active Member” as an individual who has been a member who has attended at least 3 monthly meetings AND has 8 hours or more of service to the club for the season.  If you wish to run for an office, it is your responsibility to sign in at every meeting and/or service project.  Service may be hosting an Open House, volunteering at a fund raising event, grooming, etc.  Attending a fund raising event without volunteering to help will not count as service to the club.  If you have any questions, please contact Tim Cupka at 603-539-5077.  This year’s Nominating Committee consists of Fred Watson (603-520-1506; email watsonnh@msn.com), Dave Sweeney (603-367-9206 or 617-930-7335) and we are still looking for a third member.  If you would like to run for an office or nominate someone else to run, please contact one of them as soon as possible.  Elections will be held at our monthly meeting in April.

TRAIL MASTER’S REPORT Dave Charrette

Finally- We got a snow storm that will change our trail conditions for the better.  Yet, more would be better.  Extreme Caution still needs to be taken while riding.  Icy areas are still present.  Water bars can open up at anytime.  Conditions can change within hours.

That said, Thank you to all who donated their Christmas trees to reduce the amount of hay bales needed to help with the snow bridges.  We are still working on the new and old trails throughout our trail system.

Please respect Landowners and STAY ON TRAILS and obey all signs.  Without landowners we would not have any trails.  Be courteous to all trail users, always slow down while approaching another trail user (hiker, skier, fellow snowmobilers) this could make a difference if a trail gets closed or stays open.  Riding NH Trails is a privilege, not a right.  Your actions are the future of our sport.  Thank you to all who make our club successful.

Please be aware that sled dog races will be held on our trails on March 6 & 7.  Delays may be expected at some junctions.  Anyone interested in helping on the trails those days should contact Dave Charrette.

REMINDER:  The General Meeting on February 20 (following Winter Carnival) will be a pizza party.

On January 16 many people participated in a Poker Run, starting at the Marina or the Clubhouse and ending back at the Clubhouse.  The top winning hand was held by Jim McLaughlin, followed by a tie for second place between Bob Radie and Melissa McLaughlin.  On that same day a chili cook-off was held at the Open House.  There were three very different chilis to sample and vote on.  The winning chili was made by Bonny Randall.

HOUSE COMMITTEE - Donna & Fred Jones

Monthly General Meetings are held on the THIRD Saturday of each month from September to April.  Our Pot Luck Suppers begin at 6:15 pm with the General Meeting immediately following.  Open Houses are held every Saturday during the riding season.

Saturday Open Houses - Open Houses are held at the clubhouse in Madison every Saturday throughout January and February, and possibly March (weather permitting).  Please stop by the clubhouse, warm up and grab a bite to eat.  Got any ideas for “special” open house events?--(we’ve had a chili cook-off and a chicken cook-off is in the works)  Many people who indicated that they’d be willing to host or help with an open house last year, did not follow through and do so.  We need more people to be involved.  Please check the calendar at the club house or call Donna Jones at 603-651-8619 or 603-323-7470 (or email fredonna@roadrunner.com) and sign up to host, help out at the Clubhouse, or contribute a food item to be sold, at an Open House.  Please remember that we always need donations of desserts, snacks, soups, chowders, chili or anything else you’d like to make.  If you can’t host an open house, make something and drop it by the clubhouse on Saturday morning after 10:00 a.m. or contact Donna Jones or Ann Montague (ACMonta@aol.com, 603-539-7886) to make alternate arrangements.  A special thank you to club member Bob Wentworth who, for the past several years has provided the kindling to start the fires which help make our clubhouse a great place to come in and warm up!

MEMBERSHIP REPORT - Randi Monroe

If you have family or friends who want to join the club and register, they can do so at Charrette’s Flooring on Rt 16 in Center Ossipee, Watson’s Store on Rt 16 in West Ossipee, and Profile Powersports on Rt 16 in Albany and pay only the $30.00 Club dues with their registration fees.  They can also join and register at Barton’s Motorsports on Rt 16 in Tamworth or Canoe King on Rt 16 in West Ossipee, but they will have to pay a few dollars more for their memberships, as these vendors are charging us to do the memberships.  We have 502 families paid for this year already, and I’m sure there will be lots more with all the good snow.  Keep it coming!!  There are 246 families from MA, 224 from NH, 13 from RI, 7 from CT, 8 from ME, and 1 each from NY, NJ, and VT.   I have been processing the memberships in roughly a week, once I get them, so it will take about two weeks to get your membership materials once you mail them.
